Watch Isang Tanong video on Panels and Guidelines. Francis Lucas (CMN). [Sound effect] *Fuzzy radio broadcast* “According to fashion experts, bangs will be trendy for both sexes this year, especially for the women. This forecast applies to most of the world, from Hollywood to Hong Kong. BUT fortunately it does not apply to us here in Iran. Women who will be caught going against the law will be executed. Again, this is Good Morning Iran…” Executed, just because you had bangs? How uncool, most would say. But not for the women in Iran; some even are fundamentalists who would prefer this rule and ‘go’ as the Koran orders them. And unluckily, Betty had to learn this, the hard way. Betty is the main character in the movie “Not Without My Daughter.” The movie centers of Betty, as the movies illustrated her struggles as a wife trying to get back to her country and a mother, who will do anything to go back to her native land with her daughter. Betty Mahmoody lives happily with her husband, Moody and her daughter Mahtob at their home at the United States. One day, her husband receives a phone call, saying that his family wants him to visit them back at his homeland of Iran. At first, Betty is reluctant at his request that they go there for a 2-week vacation. She reasons out that the country is dangerous at that time. Although the Shah has left the country, Iran is still walking limp after the damages that has been done. At the end, Betty was convinced that the trip is only a vacation and that they will get back to the United States after they have visited his family. She was wrong. Dead wrong. It turns out that she was tricked into going to Iran, that the trip was just a one-way trip. No more going home to her cozy American life. She was stuck into a country that is a complete opposite to what she has used to know. She was forced to a life that she never imagined, that’s why she really wanted to get out of the country as soon as possible. She tried on contacting the Swiss Embassy, because there was no US Embassy. But she was dumbfounded when she learned that the laws were not the same rules that she knew. The moment that she went into this foreign land, their laws were absurd as she sees the place itself. If she was to get out of the country, it was simple enough—a divorce with her husband. Sure she can do it, after all the beatings she has encountered with her husband, who was a very loving person when they were still at the United States. But after going back to his country, everything has changed. A divorce would solve her problem of going back to her country. But because she was in Iran’s territory, another rule was blocking her way—the divorce would mean that the child’s custody would be given to the father. She was not going out that easy without her daughter. She had many attempts but almost all her efforts were in vain. Not until a time that she met a person that was willing to help her, but it would require her to really be patient. She had to wait for months just for her to have the right time. In the end, after all she has experienced, all the hardships paid off as she was able to cross the border, successfully with her daughter. If one would want to understand cross-cultural communication, this movie is highly recommended for all. The movie exhibits the best examples of how cultures differ. There were many scenes and events that portrayed how two cultures could be so different. One was the very warm welcome by the family of the husband at the airport itself. Such behavior in other countries could be so embarrassing Other scenes was when they got out of the car, there was a goat that was slit in the throat, which terrified the child at the sight of an innocent animal being killed at her front. But for the Iranians, it was a tradition of welcoming special guests. Betty takes a shower a lot of times during the day, and for her it was her way of relaxing. But for the Iranians, showering is a way of cleansing one’s body spiritually. And what more could make the body unclean is through lovemaking, that’s why Moody’s families and relatives that they do make love several times a day. And the maybe the most terrifying part that really got Betty off her shoes was when she was almost executed just because her bangs is reveal in oublic view. For the Iranians, a women must be concealed, only her eyes are allowed to be seen, enough for her to do her work. As seen in the movie, cultures really define a person. It is evident on how Betty was treated by her husband in his native land. Their culture was a very patriarchal society. Women were regarded as second-class only, that they should obey everything the man says. It reminds me of an ad by HSBC, ‘what’s good for one may be bad for another one.’ The thing that I can say is that we cannot change those cultures that we dislike, we only have the power to respect them.

One of the most influential rappers of all time, most of the time misjudged his misdemeanor and straight-forward lyrics. If one has to cite an artist that still earns million of dollars and garners platinums even he or she has passed away, Tupac can be one of the few. In this book, one can fully understand who Tupac was when he was still living. He talked about poverty, drugs, and how he was against it. He aint no saint but the book will narrate his life-struggles, how he fought through it, how success gave him ups and downs, and even at his death, he was still glorious. This is the written counterpart of the movie 'Tupac Ressurection' which was produced by Eminem. | Category: | Movies | | Genre: | Drama |
This is an old movie, but still, I wanted to give a review on this. I just watched the movie for the third time when we had our 'Kursong Rizal'. This tackles the life, obviously, of the Philippines' national hero, the First Filipino, or the Pride of the Malayan Race--Dr. Jose Rizal. But the story didn't go with the traditional plot, in chronological order, rather, it made some excerpts from his novels namely 'Noli Me Tangere' (Touch Me Not) and El Filibusterismo, to explain further how the national hero became 'the' national hero. This explained how he thinked, and how he lived. And this movie also showed that he is no stiff-neck; he also did some mischievous deeds as well to provide comedy to the story. GMA Films made a real good movie, going to the expectations of the audience, as well as giving light to who Jose Rizal was. It's cool to see so many real good artists joining in and contributing to the film. Some artists are so good you'll feel the scene without any script. But then again, if you want to see his claimed 'other side', I suggest you watch 'Bayaning Third World'.
